Lightroom 5.3 has been announced at the Adobe Max conference as a free update for all users, as well as available as a standalone purchase. It's designed to be much simpler-to-use than previous versions, but still powerful enough to be useful for professional photographers. The new version will include three different modes: Basic, which is ideal for beginners; Guided, which helps take people through certain actions step by step; and Develop, which is what you want to use if you know how to do it yourself. The Basic mode is designed for simpler tasks, like renaming files. It has even got a help button which will show you context-sensitive hints on what you can do to your photos. You can move backwards and forwards between the three modes, depending on what sort of editing work you want to get on with. There's also an automatic lens correction tool built in, similar to the one that's used by Photoshop Elements. It's now been improved for better 3D perspective correction. In terms of photographic effects, there are now two new ones: perspective correction and radial filter overlays which give circular highlights as if they're coming from a camera lens. There's also a new HDR (High Dynamic Range) image-enhancing mode which, as the name implies, takes multiple exposures of the same scene to produce one image with more detail in shadows and highlights. Another new feature is the ability to hide unused photos. If you don't want them to be shown in your library, you can now hide them under their own folder so they'll just stay out of the way. The other main features that photographers will be interested in are better video support for shooting and sharing video clips that can be edited using Lightroom 5. 3. There are also plenty of other updates to the library, sharpening tools and red-eye removal, too. Lightroom 5.3 is available for Mac OS X Yosemite (10.10) and Windows 8.1 (64-bit). It's free if you already own the software; otherwise it costs £79 for one license or £179 for five licenses. You can download it direct from Adobe at www.adobe.co.uk/go/lightroom_5_3 . The company has also made a video introduction to Lightroom 5 available at vimeo . com/ondemand/lightroom5 . A free trial version is available on request from Adobe at www . adobe . co . uk/tryphotography . Pentax K-50 Review IntroductionThe Pentax K-50 is designed to be an entry-level DSLR, and the company has put a strong emphasis on making it easy for beginners to use. It's aimed at people who are stepping up from a compact camera and hoping to take advantage of the bigger sensor and better image quality capable with a DSLR without needing to learn all the intricacies of one. Its aim is also to be affordable, with a price tag of under £450/US$570, which is less than half that of many existing Pentax DSLRs. cfa1e77820
